In the race to produce the most eco-friendly vehicles, Toyota and Lexus are pulling ahead according to the latest rankings from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). The nonprofit's 2024 GreenerCars list saw electric models dominating the top spots, with Toyota and Lexus securing several prime positions.
The Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid topped the charts, earning the highest Green Score rating for its exceptional fuel efficiency and low emissions footprint. The Lexus RZ 300e all-electric luxury SUV nabbed the second spot, showcasing the brand's commitment to sustainable performance.
Four fully electric vehicles and two plug-in hybrids comprised the top six greenest models evaluated by ACEEE's rigorous ratings system. Scores are calculated based on factors like manufacturing emissions, energy use, and tailpipe pollution over the vehicle's lifecycle.
"Automakers need to rapidly roll out more affordable electric options to ensure the environmental and cost benefits are accessible across income levels as we move away from gasoline-powered transportation," stated Peter Huether, ACEEE's senior transportation research associate.
The focus on attainability comes as average electric vehicle prices dropped 18% in 2023 amid rising competition and improved battery technologies. These market forces helped propel a 46% surge in U.S. EV sales to 1.2 million units last year.
While dedicated EVs reigned supreme, Toyota's RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid also earned a spot among the top 12 "Greenest" models. Huether noted hybrids provide an efficient transitional option where charging infrastructure lags.
The rankings highlight Toyota and Lexus' aggressive Push into electrification across mainstream and luxury sectors. Toyota's Prius was an early hybrid pioneer over 20 years ago.
As environmental regulations tighten and eco-conscious consumers demand greener options, automakers are scrambling to field affordable long-range EVs. Toyota and Lexus have established an early advantage in this crucial industry transformation.
